Rob Gutteridge, “Cast drawing”, graphite on paper, 2017

Have you ever wanted to learn to draw and paint realistically in a European style atelier art school? Now in Australia you can, at the Rob Gutteridge School of Classical Realism. The Summer School Intensive gives you a taste of full-time atelier training, working from plaster casts in the morning and the life model in the afternoon. Immersing yourself in the world of classical realism, drawing and painting 8 hours a day over two weeks you will be taught by the School’s Director, Rob Gutteridge. Learn the sight-size method of drawing and apply it to cast and life drawing. The life model will take one pose for 2 weeks, making the 40-hour pose a special feature of the Summer School. This intensive will introduce new skills, and hone those you already have. It is suitable for beginners to advanced students and practicing artists.

Summary

Atelier training requires extended time to make, improve, and resolve each drawing or painting. This approach is necessary if visual and technical issues are to be addressed in sufficient depth. The time spent is well rewarded in the high quality of learning and its outcomes.

Tuition:

Week 1: drawing

Plaster cast and life drawing: tuition covers

  • sight-size method
  • block in
  • shadow lines
  • contour refinement
  • compressed values
  • value categories: lights, half tones, core shadow, reflected light, cast shadow
  • charcoal techniques
  • basic anatomy
  • how to make a transfer drawing

Charcoal lends itself to a “painterly” approach to drawing, well suited to dealing with figure ground relationships, and the figure in a value context.

Week 2: Painting and/or drawing

  • Reiteration of visual concepts covered in Week 1 drawing
  • How to make and use a value scale – cast painting
  • Use of a limited palette for skin colours – life painting
  • How to apply paint, and control edges
  • Technique: dead colouring to full colour form description
  • Knowledge of materials and use of equipment
